The chewing surface of the molars and premolars have grooves which can sometimes be deep and too narrow for you to brush clean.  These are very susceptible sites for cavities to start and spread below the surface of the tooth.  Preventative resin restorations and sealants are placed into these deep grooves to seal them from food and bacteria.   This lowers your chance of decay and loosing much more tooth structure.
