Regular dental cleanings are mandatory in preserving a healthy smile and are ideally performed every 6 months. This preventive treatment includes the removal of mineralization that can irritate gums and facilitate bacterial growth. In addition, the hygienist will remove any stains and plaque present on the teeth. Finally, the treatment wraps up with polishing the teeth to give them a sparkling finish.
It has been scientifically established that oral health has a strong relationship to other systemic diseases such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease, pulmonary disease, kidney disease, as well as to fetal development. Some patients with gum diseases such as gingivitis (swollen and/or bleeding gums) or periodontitis (ongoing bone loss around teeth) should schedule more frequent cleanings (every 3-4 months) until their gums are restored to health.
