The bone that holds a tooth in place is called the tooth socket. Following a tooth extraction, the bone may resorb unless we graft the socket. This is called socket preservation and it is performed to maintain bone height and thickness for future procedures such a dental implants, or for complete dentures to aid stability.
After the tooth is gently removed the socket preservation grafting procedure is ideally performed right away, unless an infection was present. After 4 months, a dental implant may then be confidently placed at the same site.
